2017 Wheatley Team Championships

Written by Administrator on .

Plymouth was lucky to be hosting the 2017 Wheatley championships and we were hoping that home soil would help in producing some great results. The Wheatley Championships is a team competition with different levels of ability to help include participation and with six different levels it meant that Devon had 90 boys competing.

The first competitors were in the level 6 under 10 made up of Jake Stanley, Hayden Woodhouse, Jack Stewart, James Gale, Calvin Harper and Joe Dennis and from the start the boys from Plymouth were flying high. These boys were consistently in the top six positions but a stand out performance from Jake Stanley really consolidated the team score and with top scores on the floor, pommel, rings, parallel bars and high bar it was no surprise that Jake finished top of the podium with a fantastic gold medal. Jack Stewart also competed new routines and with minimal mistakes he also finished on the podium in 3rd place with teammate James Gale in 5th and Hayden Woodhouse in 6th. With the team producing solid score it was to no surprise that this team finished in 1st place with the team category. These boys have shown great improvement and their effort in training combined with their dedication desired their success today, well done boys!

Next up was Sam Street and Eiger Swanscow in the Level 5 under 12’s competition. Sam has not competed since last year and although not in a team he was likely to put pressure on himself for an individual placement. Top scoring on floor and rings gave Sam a fighting chance up an unfortunate error on the parallel bars resulted in him finishing 3rd. Nonetheless, it was a fabulous result and we are delighted with his performance. Eiger however managed consistent routines with no major errors and with top scores on pommel, vault and parallel bars he manged to secure a 1st place finish in his category. Very well doe Eiger on a fantastic result.
Stepping up a gear into the level 4 competition we had Marley Tyndall, George Falconer and Freddie Falconer and with only three in a team every score counted. These boys had few minimum errors and they were competing new skills so they were going for gold. They were in the top spot on many pieces and when the scores came in everyone from Plymouth was happy. Freddie finished in 4th place, George placed in bronze medal position and Marley in silver medal position ad collectively they finished in team 1st place. Well done boys on a great competition.

A special mention must go to all the volunteers who worked so hard to enabled this competition to run as smoothly as it did.  Our fantastic team of parents and helpers rallied around to assist with preparation, cleaning, announcing, refreshments and scoring, to name but a few.  A massively thank on behalf of Plymouth Swallows goes to you all.
Well done to all the boys who competed in the Wheatley Championships competition.
