Boys Devon Levels Competition 2017

Exeter Gymnastics Club were the host to the boys Devon Levels for 2017 and although Plymouth had less boys competing than normal we still had high hopes that we would see some success. The format of this competition is gymnasts can choose a level that suits their ability so the competition is as fair as possible.
The competition started strongly with Calvin Harper producing some fantastic performances in the level 6 under 8 years of age competition, his consistently high scores on each piece enabled him to finish in 2nd place overall. Well done Calvin!
Next we had the Level 6 under 10 competition where we had  James Gales, Jack Stewart, Hayden Woodhouse and Joe Dennis competing for Plymouth. These boys have shown huge improvement and competed brilliantly over the six pieces of apparatus and results demonstrated this. James Gale had high start values and with accurate routines he finished on the podium in 2nd place and with teammate Jack Stewart also having minimal errors across all his routines and combined with fabulous performances he also ended up on the podium in 3rd place. Again from Plymouth and narrowly missing out on the medals was Hayden Woodhouse, he has improved in many areas of his gymnastics but with such a strong field of competitors he ended up in 4th position. The final boy in this category from Plymouth was Joe Dennis who has competently moved up the rankings and we are sure that he will continue to do so. Joe still had many good routines and finishing 7th  out of 15th is still a great achievement especially as his scores added to the tally and Plymouth were crowned the under 8 Level 6 team champion with a winning score of 202.20.
Ben Gale was next up in the Level 6 over 12 category and with the skills getting more tough it was going to be interesting if Ben could achieve what he can do in training. His floor routine started with powerful high tumbles and this was the theme for the rest of his competition. Ben ended up winning his competition by 3 marks which is amazing. Well done Ben and keep up the great performances.
The next gymnast to compete in the Level 5 under 12 competition was  Eiger Swinscow. Eiger has shown some great attributes and has progressed increasing well since joining Plymouth in January.  His stand out performances were on the floor and high bar and with minimal errors on the other pieces Eiger sounded recorded a 1st place final. Well done Eiger.
The final competitor was Marley Tyndall and in a strong cohort of competitors we knew from the start the results would be close. Marley produced many fantastic performances and his pommel routine was by far his best yet and combine this with an excellent floor routines he finished in 2nd place and with 0.4 tenths of a mark separating the top 3 it goes to show how close this competition was.
Congratulations to all the boys who represented Plymouth in this competition and well done for your dedication to training and fantastic work ethic. Also we should mention a big thank you to the coaches Freya Reavill and James Barley and also the parents who help to support their sons in their chosen sport.
